In 1977, the Norbertine Fathers were invited to the southern part of India by the Bishop of Tiruchirappalli Diocese and founded the Norbertine Community at Sembattu which later became St. Norbert Priory sembattu. Norbertine fathers were called to work for the backward population that work in skin tanneries. Taking up the challenge the Norbertine community worked for the education and health of the people in the locality. Now the priory is expanded to 6 different communities, working in 4 different dioceses of south India involved in pastoral, educational and social work ministries.
